A bug discovered by researcher Vsevolod Kokorin, also known as Slonser, allows anyone to impersonate Microsoft corporate email accounts, making phishing attempts more convincing. Kokorin reported the email-spoofing bug to Microsoft, but the company initially dismissed it, claiming they couldn't reproduce the issue. After Kokorin publicized the bug on X (formerly Twitter), Microsoft reopened his report. The bug affects emails sent to Outlook accounts, impacting potentially 400 million users globally. Despite not sharing technical details to prevent misuse, Kokorin's revelation highlights ongoing security challenges for Microsoft, which has faced multiple cybersecurity incidents recently, including breaches linked to Chinese and Russian hackers.
Solar energy is experiencing a significant surge in the United States, outpacing other electricity sources despite criticisms from the fossil fuel industry about its reliability and scale. Solar accounted for just 3.9% of the U.S. power mix in 2023 but is projected to make up 58% of new electricity generation in 2024, driven by demand from Big Tech companies like Amazon and Google. These companies, committed to 100% clean energy, are contributing to the rising demand as data centers increasingly rely on renewable energy. Challenges remain, such as integrating renewables into an aging power grid and ensuring consistent power supply when solar and wind are not generating. However, advancements in battery storage and the economic competitiveness of solar are poised to address these issues. Renewable projects seeking grid connection have reached nearly 2,500 gigawatts, reflecting a massive potential for future growth. Despite natural gas producers' claims about their role in meeting rising electricity demand, the trend points towards a continued shift to renewable energy, supported by technological advancements and policy incentives.
