  1. Neuralink's brain-computer interface, Link, encountered a hurdle during a human trial. Implanted in 29-year-old Noland Arbaugh, the device malfunctioned as some ultra-fine threads retracted, reducing the number of functioning electrodes. This setback impacted performance measurements, but fortunately engineers were able to address the issue through software adjustments without needing to remove the implant, which remained safe. Arbaugh, despite the malfunction, continues to find the technology beneficial. He described it as a "luxury overload" that aids his reconnection with the world. While this initial trial shows promise, Neuralink must conduct further safety and efficacy testing before securing FDA approval for widespread use.

  2. The U.S. labor market, previously a picture of strength, might be showing signs of a slowdown. New claims for unemployment benefits jumped to their highest level since August 2023, exceeding analyst expectations. This comes on the heels of a weaker-than-anticipated hiring report for April and a decline in job openings. While the unemployment rate remains low, some economists worry this is the start of a worrying trend. The Federal Reserve, keeping a close eye on jobs data to manage inflation, may need to adjust its plans, especially considering upcoming interest rate decisions.
